Project Title (1)

Provision of Day Care Centre Facilities

Project Summary

This Day Care Project aims to expand day care provisions for children aged 0-3 years. Day Care Centres are being constructed or facilities renovated to meet the developmental and educational needs of children and the social needs of parents. This involves the construction of a new Day Care Centre at Grand Anse Praslin, on-going construction work and development of facilities at Anse Etoile, and the extension and renovation of facilities at Bel Air.

Current Status: Anse Etoile Day Care Centre is being registered.

Community-Based Kid’s Gathering Initiative

Project Summary

This is a developmental project with the aim of promoting the overall development of children aged 3months to 4 years and improve childminding services through community facilities. As a pilot project in six districts there was a need to set up structures and initiate implementation processes. Community-based activities included identifying participating districts, upgrading the facilities in those districts; capacity building activities included training of resource persons; strategic actions consisted of preparing assessment tools, procuring toys and materials.

Current Status: The initiative is operational at the St Louis District Administration

Expansion of the Baby Gymnastic Programme

Project Summary

This is an ambitious project with the aim of expanding access to Baby Gym Facilities. In the project profile it is clear that apart from the on-going servicing of the Day Care Centres on Mahé, new centres on Praslin and La Digue will be operational. One major outcome of the project is the monitoring of children’s basic gymnastic movement.

Current Status: Facilities on La Digue are being secured to commence the programme.

Development of Early Learning programmes for children aged 3 months to 4 years in Day Care Centres.

Project Summary

The project is intended to introduce an early learning programme for children attending Day Care Centres. This is to prepare children for Crèche Education, monitor learning readiness, and develop an early learning readiness tool.

Current Status:The Programme is being developed.

Establish Profile Document for Day Care Children

Project Summary

In this project a comprehensive Profile Document for each child in Day Care Centres is to be established. Also, processes are to be developed to allow for professional sharing of the profile.

Current Status: The Profile is being piloted.

Implementing Health Screening at Crèche Enrollment

Project Summary

Early detention and early intervention are necessary in order to facilitate the learning and teaching process and to ensure healthy development of the child. This project seeks to address these two issues through the implementation of a screening process for all children at crèche enrollment.

Current Status: The Screening Process is being piloted.

Provision of Aids for Children with Special Needs

Project Summary

This is a special needs project intended to equip children with special aids to facilitate their learning and to help them to cope with everyday activities. The children needing the aids have been identified and some administrative processes have been initiated to procure the aids.

Current Status: Still awaiting overseas provision –part implementation with local provision

Implementation and evaluating the ante-natal and post-delivery Parenting Education Programme

Project Summary

This project is intended to strengthen parental education programme to promote and improve maternal and child wellbeing. Moreover, built into the project is a strong evaluation component to assess its effectiveness and develop strategies for maintenance or improvement. This project was planned to cover the six regions (on Mahé and Praslin) and would involve about 600 parents.

Current Status: Implementation is on-going. Data is being collected for the evaluation.

Establishing suitability check system for childminders

Project Summary

This is a child protection project to determine the suitability of childminders and their setting, through a screening process. This project involves consultation with a range of partners and stakeholders, the establishment of a Screening Panel and development of Procedural Guidelines for the check.

Current Status: The system is in place and suitability check is being carried out.

Strengthening the implementation of the Risk Indicator Framework (RIF)

Project Summary

The project aims to improve early detection and intervention of at risk children through the implementation of the RIF. This project intends to gather evidence of non-compliance and to implement effective measures.

Current Status:The Audit Report is being prepared.

 

SECTOR: INSTITUTE OF EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT

Project Title(1)

Establishing structures and procedures for data collection based on ECCE for Health Sector

Project Summary

This project is in line with the recommendations of the SABER ECD Report to improve information system to make ECCE data readily available for national, regional and international reporting. The project has been designed in four phases: initial consultation with partners, convocation of international consultant, Validation phase and Piloting Phase.

Current Status: The first consultative phase with the World Bank has been completed. The Bank will be providing both financial and technical assistance. The project is expected to commence in the coming weeks.

Monitoring Child Development Outcome: The Use of the Denver Development Screening Test (DDST) in the Child Health Programme of the Ministry of Health

 

Project Summary

This is a pilot research project which extends the data information process and targets child development outcome, specifically. It aims to establish the overall levels of development of children in Seychelles and clarify issues associated with the Denver Development Screening Test.

Current Status: Findings of the Pilot Study is being disseminated in the 3rd ECCE Forum.

Assuring the Quality of the Childminding Programme: Building the Capacity of Childminders

Project Summary

The main aim of this project is to run a pre-registration training programme for childminders based on the national quality standards in two phases. The first phase of the programme which focused on the mandatory standards for Health, Child Rights and Protection, Safety and Physical Environment has been implemented. Over About 80 childminders on Mahé, Praslin and La Digue have undergone training. Activities included developing the training programme for childminders and guidelines for the trainers. In the second phase planned for February 2016 the childminders will be trained on the remaining six standards.

 

Other activities consist of developing promotional materials for the standards, and guide for parents Also, a research component has been injected into the project which entails piloting the implementation of the national standards following registration of childminders.

 

Current Status: Over 117 Childminders have undergone Sensitisation Training on the 10 National Quality Standards for Childminding Services.
