Shirley Choppy IECD Chief Executive

As we bid farewell to another memorable year and embrace the holiday season, we at the Institute of Early Childhood Development (IECD), takes a moment to reflect on the Institute’s remarkable achievements and express gratitude for the unwavering support received. This year has been particularly significant for the IECD, as it attained the prestigious status of a Category 2 Institute under the Auspices of UNESCO, marking a major milestone in its journey as an international institute.

Undoubtedly, one of the IECD’s biggest accomplishments this year was achieving official recognition from UNESCO. This milestone not only refreshes IECD’s image locally but also endows it with the privilege to participate in international forums, enabling the institute to actively contribute to shaping global development strategies in Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE). With this new status, IECD is committed to remaining updated on new mandates and developments in the field of ECCE, ensuring it remains at the forefront of innovation and progress.

Reflecting on its mandate to continuously meet the country’s demand for childminders, the IECD has successfully trained close to 50 prospective childminders this year. With a dedicated focus on imparting comprehensive skills and knowledge, IECD aims to elevate the standard of childminding services to better serve the nation’s children, fostering an environment of holistic development.

In keeping with the ambitious National Action Plan 2023-2024, the IECD has made commendable progress, with almost 60% implementation across all sectors. Guided by its unwavering commitment to the advancement of ECCE, IECD has committed resources and expertise to areas that significantly impact the overall wellbeing of the nation’s children. As we embark on a new year, IECD remains resolute in its pursuit of realizing the envisioned plan comprehensively.

This year also saw the launching of the captivating IECD theme song, titled ‘The Promise.’ Its words of comfort and prosperity resonated deeply among many during the holiday season, particularly for those who were unable to fully experience the joyous moments for various reasons. By spreading hope and positivity, transcending borders and bringing solace to countless hearts.

Additionally, IECD has significantly bolstered its workforce in various sectors, through strategic recruitments and the creation of new sections within the institute. With a relentless commitment to its mission, IECD aims to leverage this expanded workforce to enhance the quality and reach of its programs, further facilitating the development of ECCE on a broader scale. It is with great optimism that IECD hopes to achieve 100% of its workforce capacity in the coming year, exemplifying its dedication to fulfill its international mandate and fostering a nurturing environment for children.

Lastly, this past year, the IECD celebrated its momentous 10th-year anniversary with a series of engaging activities and campaigns. This milestone allowed the institute to reflect on its journey, renew its commitment to its mission, and deepen ties with its partners. The festivities not only served as a reminder of the accomplishments thus far but also as inspiration for a promising future ahead.

As we look back on all that has been achieved, on behalf of IECD, it’s Governing Board and Local Board, I extend heartfelt gratitude to the Government, all sectors, and relevant agencies in ECCE, partners and stakeholders which have been instrumental in IECD’s success. United by a shared vision for the betterment of Early Childhood Care and Education, IECD embraces the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead, propelled by renewed vigor and determination. With each passing year, IECD will continue to forge new paths, empowering generations to come and creating an enduring legacy of excellence in ECCE.
